Thanks to audio issues during our recording of the SGR Coffee Break, my Gen Con recap was lost. I figured why not try and write about it due to this loss. So, let’s see how this goes.
The most frequent question I get asked is what is Gen Con? It is a celebration of all things tabletop gaming, with some video gaming thrown in. Everything from Magic the Gathering to Star Trek Catan is consumed and enjoyed over the course of four sleepless days. If you have a favorite board game, there is a good chance there are several people willing to play it with you at this convention.
Gen Con runs over four days, usually at the end of July/beginning of August. This year, just over 61,000 gamers descended upon Indianapolis, Indiana to play games of all sorts. It’s insane to see so many people gathered in one spot to do nothing but have fun and spends ungodly amounts of money.
Over the course of Gen Con 2015, I played several new games. I went to bed no earlier than 3AM and awoke no later than 8:30AM. I shared a hotel room with four other people and we had a ball playing games and cracking adolescent level jokes. By the time Sunday rolled around, sleep deprivation was kicking in and we pretty much laughed at anything and everything.
Gen Con is something that is truly hard to put into words. It is an experience unlike any other and really needs to be experienced to comprehend just how big the con is, and the sheer variety of activities there are. 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of this con, so if you get only one chance to attend it, that would be the one to plan for. I’ll see ya there!
